Crohn's Disease Nursing Care - Giving The Best

Nursing care is very important for any disease condition. The debilitating nature of can be quite disheartening. The condition of the patient deteriorates as the days go by. There is however very little cure that a patient can get from nursing care. The disease causes increased bowel movements during the day, causing dehydration to the person. The patient also has low levels of red blood cells leading to anemia in addition to fever and severe weight loss.

There have been very little findings about the causative factors for Crohn's disease. With very little understanding about the cause, the cure and the treatment options are also not many. If you suffer from a disease and have very little information on how to tackle it, it is best to learn to live with it and face it. You can provide good nursing care if you know how to tackle this disease.

Keep Yourself Informed

It is very important to give nursing care and love to a person suffering from the disease. More so, if there is nothing left to cure it. Appropriate care for includes understanding the reasons for the condition, options available and steps to be taken to prepare the body for the condition as well as to deal with the attack.

One of the symptoms of the is the inflammation of the gastrointestinal tract. This causes diarrhea, fatigue, fever and weight loss, skin rashes and mouth ulcers. As the main cause of the disease is unknown, you can find ways to treat and give some care to the symptoms that are exhibited. There are three main options for providing nursing care- medication, surgery and good nutrition.

Medication - Medicines for only have limiting power to alleviate pain, inflammation and manage the condition. There is unfortunately no medicine to cure the condition. You can consult your physician and find the medicine that is right for your symptoms. You need to work with your doctor and find out the best medication to relieve your pain and the symptoms.

Surgery

- This option is usually recommended for children who have been affected with a severe attack of the Crohn's disease. Surgery does not cure the condition but helps the children to deal with the condition better.

Good Nutrition - Good food and diet is an essential nursing care option in any disease condition. Diet plays a major role and helps to identify the foods responsible for aggravating the condition. You need to find out the foods which can flare up the condition...

  • Oily or spicy foods are found to worsen the condition and you may also be sensitive to gluten or dairy products.
  • Gluten free diet is found to reduce the symptoms of Crohn's disease. You can thus have natural foods like vegetables, meat and fish.
  • Sugar is also found to flare up the condition. Sugar free diet is advised to keep the sugar levels at a consistent level.
  • High fiber foods are found to irritate the intestinal lining and thus increase inflammation. You are thus prescribed a low residue diet. This diet may lack nutrients. The patient is thus advised to drink vegetable juice and take supplements for the nutrients.
  • It is advisable to avoid alcohol, caffeine and foods high in sulfur.
  • You should drink plenty of fluids as there is mineral loss in diarrhea.
  • Also do exercise to keep the body fit.

Escherichia coli type 1 pili trigger late IL-8 production by neutrophil-like differentiated PLB-985 cells through a Src family kinase- and MAPK-dependent mechanism. J Leukoc Biol. 2008 Nov 17; Authors: Semiramoth N, Gleizes A, Turbica I, Sandre C, Gorges R, Kansau I, Servin A, Chollet-Martin S The innate immune response to enteropathogenic bacteria includes chemokine-induced polymorphonuclear neutrophil (PMN) migration across mucosal epithelia leading to bacterial clearance and resolution of infection. Among these bacteria, diffusely adherent Escherichia coli expressing Afa/Dr fimbriae (Afa/Dr DAEC), causing childhood diarrhea, can promote IL-8-dependent PMN transmigration across cultured intestinal epithelial cell monolayers via MAPK pathway activation. However, interactions b...

Helminth antigen-based strategy to ameliorate inflammation in an experimental model of colitis
Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is the most common and serious chronic inflammatory condition of the gut. Among the distinct T helper (Th) cell subsets, a Th1 type response is associated predominantly with Crohn's disease (CD) while helminth infections generate a strong Th2 type response. IBD is most prevalent in developed countries but rare in countries where infections with helminths are common. Thus, it has been hypothesized that infection with helminth infection influence the development of CD and recent clinical and experimental studies suggest strongly a beneficial role of helminth infection in IBD. In the present study we examined the effects of rectal submucosal administration of helminth antigens on subsequent experimental colitis. Mice were treated with Trichinella spiralis anti...

Intestinal macrophage/epithelial cell-derived ccl11/eotaxin-1 mediates eosinophil recruitment and function in pediatric ulcerative colitis.
In this study we demonstrate, by gene array and quantitative PCR, elevated levels of eotaxin-1 mRNA in the rectosigmoid colon of pediatric UC patients. We show that elevated levels of eotaxin-1 mRNA positively correlated with rectosigmoid eosinophil numbers. Further, colonic eosinophils appeared to be degranulating, and the levels positively correlated with disease severity. Using the dextran sodium sulfate (DSS)-induced intestinal epithelial injury model, we show that DSS treatment of mice strongly induced colonic eotaxin-1 and eotaxin-2 expression and eosinophil levels. Analysis of eosinophil-deficient mice defined an effector role for eosinophils in disease pathology. DSS treatment of eotaxin-2(-/-) and eotaxin-1/2(-/-) mice demonstrated that eosinophil recruitment was dependent on eota...

The suppressive effect of triptolide on chronic colitis and tnf-alpha/tnfr2 signal pathway in interleukin-10 deficient mice.
In this study, we evaluated its possible therapeutic effects on colitis in interleukin-10 deficient mice, a murine model of Crohn's disease. Triptolide was administered to IL-10(-/-) mice intraperitoneally every other day for 8 weeks. The severity of colitis in IL-10(-/-) mice was obviously reduced after triptolide treatment, with a reduction in the numbers of CD4+ T cells and macrophages in lamina propria. Triptolide also significantly decreased the production of TNF-alpha and IFN-gamma in colon. Furthermore, triptolide suppressed TNFR2 expression and NF-kappaB activation in colon of IL-10(-/-) mice. These data suggested that triptolide could ameliorate Th1-mediated chronic colitis and disordered immune state in IL-10(-/-) mice. A possible mechanism could be inhibiting TNF-alpha/TNFR2 sig...
Attenuation of colitis injury in rats using garcinia cambogia extract
In this study, the antiinflammatory activity of a garcinia extract was assessed in TNBS-induced colitis rats. The results obtained revealed that garcinia administration to colitic rats significantly improved the macroscopic damage and caused substantial reductions in increases in MPO activity, COX-2 and iNOS expression. In addition, garcinia extract treatment was able to reduce PGE2 and IL-1[bgr] colonic levels. These antiinflammatory actions could be related to a reduction in DNA damage in isolated colonocytes, observed with the comet assay. Finally, garcinia extract caused neither mortality nor toxicity signals after oral administration. As such, the antiinflammatory effects provided by the Garcinia cambogia extract result in an improvement of several parameters analysed in experimental ...
Il-23 and autoimmunity: new insights into the pathogenesis of inflammatory bowel disease.
IL-23 and Autoimmunity: New Insights into the Pathogenesis of Inflammatory Bowel Disease. Annu Rev Med. 2008 Oct 31; Authors: Abraham C, Cho JH The intestinal immune system has the challenge of maintaining both a state of tolerance toward intestinal antigens and the ability to combat pathogens. This balance is partially achieved by reciprocal regulation of proinflammatory, effector CD4(+) T cells, and tolerizing, suppressive Treg subsets. Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) comprises Crohn's disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis (UC). Genome-wide association studies have linked CD to a number of IL-23 pathway genes, notably IL23R (interleukin 23 receptor). Similar associations in IL-23 pathway genes have been observed in UC. IL23R is a key differentiation feature of CD4(+) Th17 cell...
